HACCI INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATION
HACCI had the honour of hosting Lieutenant Commander Andrea Argirides as its guest speaker for the International Women’s Day celebration that was held at Normanby House onThe 5th of March, 2015.
Lieutenant Commander Andrea Argirides is an Australian with a very proud Greek Cypriot Heritage, and a serving senior Naval Officer in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). Lieutenant Commander Argirides is also undertaking PhD studies with the University of Melbourne, focusing on the protection of cultural heritage and archaeological sites in conflict zones.
HACCI’s guests enjoyed an inspirational presentation of an historical analysis on women’s achievements and struggles throughout history, mainly from a military perspective. Our guests were captivated by Lieutenant Commander Andrea Argirides’ presentation, which drew from her own personal experiences, having undertaken and completed three operational tours of duty – Iraq (2008), Afghanistan (2013) and the Greater Middle East Region (2014-2015), demonstrating that “Equality for women is progress for all”.
HACCI would like to take this opportunity to thank Lieutenant Commander Andrea Argirides, for being such a gracious and generous guest speaker, Maria Vamvakinou MP and all our guests who participated in this year’s IWD celebration.

GREEK SAILING TEAM CONTENDER FOR OLYMPIC GAMES IN RIO 2016
Hellenic Wind www.hellenicwind.gr is the Greek team competing now at the qualification phase for the next Olympic Games in Rio in 2016. The team consists of Sofia Bekatorou and Konstantinos Trigonis, who are two of the most experienced and decorated sailors competing in the class. Between them they have won two Olympic medals, participated in seven Olympic Games and have collected 12 World Championship medals. Impeccable accolades.
Bekatorou and Trigonis with distinguished careers behind them, will do whatever it takes to encourage young sailors not only from Greece, but across the world. Sofia & Kostas said: “Through our long careers of 25 years in sailing with a lot of international competition, the basic line is we got to know a lot of different places and make friends. We feel that in every challenge, we can do what is needed to make it happen. We are not discouraged by difficulties and by conditions or situations that seem impossible. We really wanted to try and invest in our potential and strengths, give the best we have and promote sailing as we view it.”
At this stage of their campaign – and due to tough local economic conditions – Sofia and Kostas need every Greek’s support they can get from all over the world in order to bring to their country new glory stories.
